If you are shipping cargo to the United States, depending on the region you are sea shipping to and from, there are a number of different ports through which your items may enter including ports in New Jersey, Texas, California, Virginia, Washington and Maine.
If you are interested in shipping cargo by sea either to the United States, the first thing you’ll want to do is figure out your customs status. Your customs status is based on whether you are a U.S. resident or not. This classification serves to determine the different duty fee exemptions to which your personal items are eligible.
If you are a resident of the United States 중국배대지 returning to the country after having been away for an extended period of time, and you are shipping cargo to the United States, there are a number of items that qualify for certain duty fee exemptions including household and personal effects.
These same duty fee exemptions apply to any person (military or civilian) employed by the U.S. Government, and returning family members who have resided with this individual at post, may ship household and personal effects duty free unless items are restricted, limited, or prohibited.
Shipping Personal and Household Effects to the United States
U.S. citizens shipping goods into the country are allowed certain duty exemptions when shipping household items which include dishes, artwork, furniture, linens, books, and similar things duty free as long as you have had and been using these items for at least one year prior to shipping and these items are for personal use only. Please note, also, that the required year of use does not need to be continuous.
Duty exemptions for U.S. citizens are also applicable when shipping your personal effects which include things like clothing, jewelry, photography equipment and tape recording devices.
You are not allowed to ship inherited goods into the United States duty free unless these items meet the following specific criteria:
- They are antique goods over one century old and you have the required documentation to prove this age.
- You used these items in a household where you lived for a year or more prior to your return to the United States.
Typically the duty fees on inherited goods are small, if they do not qualify for a total exemption.
When you want to import household items and personal effects into the United States, you are required to fill out some important paperwork. You will need to complete the Customs Form (CF) 6059B, “Customs Declaration,” for accompanying goods, or the CF 3299 “Declaration For Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles.”
